Understanding Bullying

It is important to understand what bullying is, how it's different than conflict, and how it can occur online.

What is Bullying?

Bullying is when someone is being hurt either by words or actions on purpose, feels bad because of it, and has a hard time stopping what is happening to them. It may be a single incident or a series of repeated incidents. Bullying can happen anywhere—in your neighborhood, while going to school, at school, and online on social media.

Conflict not Bullying

Conflict is a normal part of life that occurs when people have different goals, needs, or opinions. Unlike bullying, conflicts can often be resolved through communication and problem-solving. However, mediation and conflict resolution are not appropriate interventions for bullying or intimidation.

Cyberbullying

Cyberbullying is discrimination, harassment, intimidation, and/or bullying through electronically transmitted communications (e.g., via technology including, but not limited to, the internet, cell phones, email, social media, texting, apps, chat rooms, and gaming systems).
